The big advantage to merging the files like this is you can very easily move and cut the video and audio files as a single block, making your editing much easier.

From my experience, it doesn’t work 100% of the time, but it works often enough that it’s worth taking the 5 secs to try it.

Apply a look-up table (LUT) in Adobe Premiere Pro or After Effects CS6 using the Red Giant Software LUT Buddy effect.  If you are using a profile such as the Tehnicolor Cinestyle on your Canon DSLR camera, using a LUT table will bring in some contrast to an otherwise very flat and very bland video.
